FTC Announces Virtual Open Meeting on November 14: Public Invited to Participate and Discuss Key Consumer Protection Initiatives

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Lina M. Khan has announced a virtual open meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 11 a.m. ET. The event will kick off with an opportunity for members of the public to share feedback and address the Commission, with each speaker allotted two minutes to comment on the FTC’s work or raise relevant issues.

The tentative agenda for the November 14 meeting includes:

  1. Older Americans Report Presentation: The Bureau of Consumer Protection’s Division of Marketing Practices will present the FTC’s latest report to Congress on protecting older adults. This report summarizes key fraud trends affecting older adults, as well as the FTC’s multifaceted approach to combat these issues through enforcement, rulemaking, and outreach programs.
  2. Click-to-Cancel Rule Presentation: The Bureau of Consumer Protection’s Division of Enforcement will discuss the new “Click-to-Cancel” Rule. This rule mandates that sellers of negative option plans offer a cancellation process as straightforward as the enrollment process. It also requires disclosure of key terms and prohibits deceptive practices in marketing, ensuring consumers give informed consent before billing begins.
  3. Merger Portal Presentation: The Bureau of Competition will provide an overview of the FTC’s new online merger portal, designed to facilitate public input on proposed transactions under FTC review. This tool allows market participants, stakeholders, and the public to submit comments directly on mergers and acquisitions.

Chair Khan will open the meeting with brief remarks and will invite members of the public to share their input on the Commission’s work. Those interested in speaking can register until Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET. For those unable to attend, written comments or links to prerecorded videos may be submitted via an online form.

A link to access the meeting will be provided shortly before the event on FTC.gov, and the recording, along with comments, will be available on the FTC’s website afterward. The Commission may also choose to make select public comments available following the event.
